Your News: Cape Coral resident officially on U.S. House ballot
TALLAHASSEE Independent Congressional candidate Jeff George decided the best way to make a people’s campaign official was with a personal touch.
The Cape Coral resident traveled to Tallahassee on Friday to hand-deliver $6,608 he raised to state election officials. George’s name will therefore be on the Nov. 4 ballot for Florida’s 14th District seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.
“This is a real victory for people in this district who want real substantial change, not just a changing of the guard between the same two parties,” George said. “I’m really grateful for all the support that we’ve received.”
George will be one of four names on the ballot, and the only one making a first-time run for public office.
His opponents are incumbent Republican Connie Mack, a longstanding Republican who’s running as an independent in state Sen. Burt Saunders, and Democrat Robert Neeld, trying a third time for the seat after losing bids in 2004 and 2006.
“I’m really looking forward to facing Rep. Mack and Sen. Saunders on the issues,” George said. “And I really appreciate the Democrats deciding to bow out of this race by running Mr. Neeld again.”
Most of the money needed for qualification was gathered in the days following George’s address on human unity and the need for accessible, responsible and citizen-focused government, delivered Sunday to a group of supporters in Fort Myers.
George, a U.S. Army veteran and part-owner of a video production company, set forth on his bid in November, defining the campaign’s central themes of transparency, integrity and accountability.
The candidate is endeavoring to give the people of Southwest Florida unprecedented access, filming day-to-day work at his headquarters in Fort Myers as well as meetings with organizations and individuals across the district.
