Things to do ... and do ... and do
Here is our comprehensive calendar of events beginning Monday, Dec. 7, 2009:
* Dec. 7 -- Popular Christian singer Paul Todd brings his Christmas concert to town at 7 p.m. on Dec. 7 at Shepherd of the Glades Lutheran Church, 6020 Rattlesnake Hammock Road.
* Dec. 8 -- It wasn’t a sure bet to succeed as a musical, but “The Color Purple” stormed Broadway in 2005, getting 11 Tony nominations. Now on a national tour, the show comes to the Naples Philharmonic Center for the Arts and plays through Dec. 13
* Dec. 10 -- Over the past decade, David Sedaris has emerged as our leading humorist, a guy willing to poke fun at himself and his family for our amusement. The Florida Repertory Theatre adapts his hilarious tale of working as an elf at Macy’s in “The Santaland Diaries,” which runs through Dec. 31.
* Dec. 11 -- Happy Hanukkah. The eight-night celebration begins at sundown.
* Dec. 13 -- Jennifer Coolidge is both lucky and stuck. She’s lucky because half the world recognizes her. She stuck because they all think of her as Stiffler’s mom from “American Pie.” The surprisingly versatile comedian finishe up her four-day run at Capt. Brien’s Off the Hook Comedy Club on Marco Island
* Dec. 15 -- Celebrate the holidays with music. The Naples Philharmonic Orchestra presents a week of holiday pops concerts featuring the Phil’s Center Chorale and Youth Chorale performing selections including “Sleigh Ride,” “Silent Night” and “Winter Wonderland.” Performances through Dec. 20
* Dec. 16 -- The Naples Players start their final week of performances for “Crimes of the Heart.” The Pulitzer prize winning play follows the often colorful lives of a group of Southern women as they navigate their way through the bonds of sisterhood. Through Dec. 20 at the Sugden Community Theatre.
* Dec. 18 -- Watching Naples City Improv is a lot like watching a high-wire act. Even when they fall flat, it’s entertaining. The comedy troupe, which puts on a “Whose Line is it Anyway” style show with improvised games, performs at the Norris Center.
* Dec. 19 -- Forget Black Friday, the weekend before Christmas is really the busiest shoppping time of the year. Take care not to catch an elbow while you are trying to snag that last Wii or copy of “The Beatles: Rock Band.”
* Dec. 21 -- Supplement your “The Beatles: Rock Band” experience by seeing some professionals play the Fab Four’s greatest hits. “A Tribute to the Beatles” comes to play with the Naples Philharmonic Orchestra. A second show plays on Dec. 22.
* Dec. 23 -- It’s the last week to catch both of the Broadway Palm Dinner Theater’s Christmas shows. “Winter Wonderettes” and “A Christmas Carol” both wrap up on Dec. 26.
* Dec. 25 -- Merry Christmas! Remember to recycle your wrapping paper.
* Dec. 26 -- Christmas is a big weekend for movies. Oscar contender “Nine,” starring Daniel Day-Lewis, and the action-packed reboot “Sherlock Holmes,” with Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law, both open in wide release. As does “It’s Complicated” and “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel.”
* Dec. 29 -- You might think of Woody Allen as a neurotic filmmaker. But he’s also a talented jazz clarinet player. He brings his New Orleans Jazz Band back to the Naples Philharmonic Center for the Arts
* Dec. 30 -- Pauly Shore made his bones by playing a perpetual moron with a good heart. Now back on the stand-up trail the comedian will be at Capt. Brien’s Off the Hook Comedy Club on Marco Island through Jan. 1
* Dec. 31 -- When breaking out the bubbly for New Year’s Eve, consider something different than champagne. Try a Spanish cava or Italian prosecco for high quality sparkling wine at a budget-friendly price
