Giving Cruisin' a Shot
Thursday, May 15, 2008
I’m going to be honest here: I have always had a somewhat snobbish attitude towards cruise ships and people that spend their money and time on them. But when I saw an online offer of an all-inclusive package with an ocean-view cabin, food and gratuities for a little over $300 per person for the whole vacation, I gave in. It was time to overcome my preconceptions and give this whole cruising vacation the old college try... Full story »
Taking the Sting out of High Gas Prices
Wednesday, May 14, 2008
It’s summer, and for a lot of us that means a lot of driving. Whether you’re going to the beach, to a party, to work, or to a movie, you’re probably cranking up the AC to stay cool and barreling down the road to your destination. Memorial Day ranks just behind Thanksgiving as the biggest travel day of the year, the roads are swamped. And along with the rest of the driving population, you’re probably getting hit pretty hard by gas prices. Full story »
All You Need Is Love... Just Not The Bug Kind
Tuesday, May 13, 2008
For anyone who has lived in Florida for more than a year, the mere mention of love bugs is enough to cause a very serious panic. Every May and September, motorists all over the gulf coast are plagued by the copulation flights of these most sinister bugs. Akin to death and taxes, we endure love bugs twice a year without fail. Keep in mind taxes only happen once a year and death will probably only happen once, which by my account successfully places love bugs at the helm of the list of shitty inevitabilities. Full story »
Going with the Wind
Monday, April 7, 2008
Waves slap the hull and above, the sail snaps smartly in a middling wind. Captain John Murray turns the key and the whining, high-pitched sound of the engine disappears. All I can hear is the breeze against the sails and the quiet sing-song of the waves below us. It’s a beautiful March afternoon, the wind blows gently but constantly from the Northwest as the sailboat slices through the water of Matanzas Pass on the Gulf of Mexico. The sun is high in the sky: The perfect conditions for a pleasant day of fun and relax on the water. Full story »
Break the Non-Voting Vicious Circle
Tuesday, April 1, 2008
It starts with young voters thinking that politicians don’t care about the issues most important to them. In turn, they don’t vote because they feel there is no one to vote for. And since young people don’t vote, politicians gear their messages and issues targeted toward the people who do vote, generally older citizens. The older crowd votes for the politician who best represents their needs in society, whom once elected comes back making decision that often leave the younger crowd indifferent, if not upset. But things don't necessarily have to be this way... Full story »

Tao of the Crazy Fish
Monday, March 17, 2008
Tamara Broker welcomed me in her Cape Coral house that doubles as her art studio: in between home schooling her son and working around the house she creates her very unique art in the lanai. Her home showcases a lot of her palm pod fish and wood masks creations: proudly displayed on the walls of the living room, kitchen and bedrooms are colorful and cheery examples of what a gifted and imaginative artist like Broker can do with a bunch of palm pods and some paint. “I make art with what people discard as garbage,” she jokes as we sit in her living room. An Aquatic Love Affair Comes Full Circle
Thursday, Jan. 3, 2008
“Just pucker up,” Robin shouts to me from the dock. “Keep your hands by your sides and stay still.” He pops up out of the water a few feet away and cautiously swims forward, his mouth pointed up towards the sky and away from the salty surface. Suddenly it looks huge, giant dripping jaws and gray lips splotched with white like countries claiming land on a black and white map... Full story »

'Tis The Time of the Season To Do Something Good
Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2007
The day after Halloween I noticed something both disturbing and thrilling: Christmas trees and multi-colored lights were everywhere, from restaurants to mall parking lots to gated community gates; the holiday season had officially arrived.
