Giving Cruisin' a Shot
Thursday, May 15, 2008
I’m going to be honest here: I have always had a somewhat snobbish attitude towards cruise ships and people that spend their money and time on them. But when I saw an online offer of an all-inclusive package with an ocean-view cabin, food and gratuities for a little over $300 per person for the whole vacation, I gave in. It was time to overcome my preconceptions and give this whole cruising vacation the old college try... Full story »
Taking the Sting out of High Gas Prices
Wednesday, May 14, 2008
It’s summer, and for a lot of us that means a lot of driving. Whether you’re going to the beach, to a party, to work, or to a movie, you’re probably cranking up the AC to stay cool and barreling down the road to your destination. Memorial Day ranks just behind Thanksgiving as the biggest travel day of the year, the roads are swamped. And along with the rest of the driving population, you’re probably getting hit pretty hard by gas prices. Full story »
All You Need Is Love... Just Not The Bug Kind
Tuesday, May 13, 2008
For anyone who has lived in Florida for more than a year, the mere mention of love bugs is enough to cause a very serious panic. Every May and September, motorists all over the gulf coast are plagued by the copulation flights of these most sinister bugs. Akin to death and taxes, we endure love bugs twice a year without fail. Keep in mind taxes only happen once a year and death will probably only happen once, which by my account successfully places love bugs at the helm of the list of shitty inevitabilities. Full story »
VIDEO/PHOTOS: Cannoli, chain saw among attractions at 25th Taste of Collier
Sunday, May 4, 2008
Ice carving may not typically elicit the same excitement associated with a grand slam or a touchdown in other spectator sports, but give Collier County residents good food and a cold beverage and they’ll cheer all the same. Sunday’s 25th annual Taste of Collier celebrated all things good about food, fun and sun at Bayfront from noon to 4 p.m. It was the event’s second year at the location, after moving from downtown Naples. Bonita Springs’ first Cinco de Mayo celebration drew in hundreds of visitors Sunday, but came short of attracting the diverse crowd its planners had hoped for. Enjoying a Slow Meal at Crust Bistro
Thursday, May 1, 2008
In a country where fast food is more popular than everywhere else in the world it’s hard to come by places that combine culinary traditions, innovation and good quality with the great value and ambiance of a French bistro. But Crust, formerly known as Toucan Grill on Bonita Beach Road, does all this and much, much more. Full story »
Going with the Wind
Monday, April 7, 2008
Waves slap the hull and above, the sail snaps smartly in a middling wind. Captain John Murray turns the key and the whining, high-pitched sound of the engine disappears. All I can hear is the breeze against the sails and the quiet sing-song of the waves below us. It’s a beautiful March afternoon, the wind blows gently but constantly from the Northwest as the sailboat slices through the water of Matanzas Pass on the Gulf of Mexico. The sun is high in the sky: The perfect conditions for a pleasant day of fun and relax on the water. Full story »

Spicy and mild, Thai Star has it all
Friday, April 4, 2008
Whenever I go to a restaurant, there’s always a dish that makes it or breaks it for me. Ordering risotto is a great way to find out if the chef is actually capable of serving Northern Italian fare, and asking for paella in a Spanish eatery might lead to delight or utter disappointment. At Thai restaurants, my make-it-or-break-it dish is chicken basil. As simple as it may sound, this concoction features most of the key ingredients of Thai cooking: fragrant ginger, fresh basil leaves and a mixture of meat and vegetables in a dark, fish sauce-based gravy... Review: 'The Wedding Singer' with little to love
Wednesday, April 2, 2008
The Barbara B. Mann’s roadshow production of “The Wedding Singer” manages to cram references to dozens of 1980s touchstones into its two-plus hours — Imelda Marcos, Clara Peller, Ronald Reagan, Mr. T, Richard Simmons, New Coke, big hair, bad fashion and ginormous cell phones. Yet it still does a criminal disservice to the music of the decade. Full story »
